Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: The passenger side inside rear dual tire on our 29 foot rv suffered total thread separation at 60 mph. this happened just after i detected a vibration that felt like an unbalanced wheel. i stopped the vehicle and inspected all 6 tires. there was no sign of a problem. i even touched each tire to see if one was a different temperature than the others. all seamed well, so i proceeded onto the highway to continue my trip. approximately 2 or 3 miles later, a loud bang occurred and i saw tire material exiting the vehicle on the passenger side. after stopping once again, it was obvious that the threads had left on of the tires. these tires were impeccable maintained. they were rotated at the prescribed interval, and i checked the pressures just before the trip (approx. 30 miles before the incident). i was traveling florida sr520, a smoothly paved highway. it was a cool day and the tires were slightly warm to the touch. while firestone tires was at a loss to explain the failure, they insist that the tires are safe and, because they are not on the recall list, they will not replace the remaining tires. i can only imagine what would have happened had the detected tire been on of the front tire given the gvwr of an rv. given similar problems with other firestone tires, i fear for the safety of my family when traveling on the remaining tires. i feel the nhtsb should investigate the safety of these tires. there are many vehicles on the road with these tires. roiling motor homes will cause a lot more havoc on the roads than have the many suvs that crashed due to faulty firestone tires.*ak (dot number: vn1l 1xd tiresize: lt225/75 r) |
