Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: I have an eddie bauer edition alpha omega car seat manufactured by cosco. the plastic clip that locks in place over the child's chest broke while my child was riding in the car seat. i am concerned that the strength of the harness was compromised because of the weak clip, and my daughter would not have been secured by the harness in the event of a sudden impact. when the clip actually broke apart (due to nothing more than normal use) i contacted the manufacturer and was told by the representative that "she had heard of this happening before" and would send me a new redesigned harness clip. she said that under extreme heat conditions plastic clip can become weak and break. my car and car seat were never subjected to anything more than normal summer heat. my concern is that there are many consumers using this product who are unaware that this component of their car seat may be weakened and break at any time. it could break while the family is simply at the grocery store, leaving them with no safe way to get their child home, or it could happen in the event of an accident and result in injury to the child. the representative i spoke with told me that if the harness was tight enough, my child would have been properly restrained, and that the harness clip has nothing to do with the safety of the car seat. it may be true that the car seat still meets the minimum safety requirements without the harness clip, but i purchased a five point car seat because i was told by several consumer agencies that the harness made a difference in the safety and performance of a car seat. other consumers who purchased this car seat are also under the assumption that there is a purpose to the harness clip, and i am sure that they would like to be made aware that it can break unexpectedly and should be replaced. i would like to see the manufacturer send the redesigned replacement harness clips to all those whose car seats are currently equipped with the faulty clip. *jb |
