Was Vehicle Towed: - Description of the Complaints: We bought our evenflo car seat, model 5931473 n1, manufactured 26 may 04, as part of a travel system with the stay in car base in late july 2004. it was backordered and didn't arrive until that fall. after we began using the seat, it got stuck in the base and couldn't be removed. in desperation i slammed the back of the seat down- it made a loud sound and i was able to remove the seat. i thought i somehow put the seat in wrong. after awhile, it happened again- with the same process of getting it unstuck. the manual didn't mention this situation. i checked the seat for recall- it hadn't been, so i thought it must be ok. we used the seat for nine months and this would happen periodically. i was concerned about the safety of the seat, but with no recalls, i decided to use it again with my new baby, born in may 2006 as it doesn't expire until 12/31/09. the problem has occurred way more frequently and my level of fear has risen considerably. i again checked for recalls, and finding none, i called evenflo. they told me they no longer make the seat and because it appears that there's something wrong with the base (it's not just my base- my friend has the same seat and even though she had a problem with her seat sticking too, she let me try it to see if it would work better with my seat- nope.) that i should stop using it and just use the seat without the base. i bought the seat for the higher weight limit (22 lbs vs. 20 lbs), and for the convenience of the stay in car base! the seat belt part is located under the seat, down by my child's bottom, so i cannot use it as a removable car seat without removing her too. i also have a toddler. they are times when lugging an infant and keeping hold of a toddler at the same time can be difficult so i feel forced to use the base. now the straps don't stay tight. i'll tighten them when i put her in the seat and when i go to remove her, i find that they have loosened somehow. this seat is completely unsafe and i need to replace it.*jb
