Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: We had a problem with a fairly new cosco eddie bauer car seat, manufactured by dorel juvenile group, model number 02537-mbp, purchased in late 2003. in february 2004, as i was buckling my son into the seat, a plastic tab on the upper (chest) buckle broke off. as a result, the upper buckle was not able to stay buckled, which seems very unsafe to me. i had no choice but to drive home with my son unbuckled. i called cosco to order a replacement part, and the phone operator at cosco asked me the model number of the seat and some other information. then she said, "ok, the cost of that part will be $3.73, can i have your credit card information please?" i had not yet told her what part i wanted to order! i concluded that she probably had been handling a lot of requests for this part, which indicates to me that it is a common problem. yet i am not aware of a recall for this part. the replacement part they sent to me was of a different design than the one that broke. a web search for cosco car seat problems turned up this document: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml01/01119.html it is a press release from the consumer product safety commission, which describes the "largest fine against children's product manufacturer in cpsc's history", $1.75 million, levied against cosco. the reason? cosco apparently "failed to report product defects that caused serious injuries and deaths to children." needless to say, i'm afraid that perhaps cosco is once again failing to report a dangerous product. *nm |
