Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: On july 3, 2005 at approximately 9:45 p.m. i was traveling eastbound on i-495 in alexandria, virginia in my 1999 jeep wrangler, sport model. i had purchased an after market 2 piece hard top roof and roof rack carrier from bestop, inc. 2100 w. midway blvd., broomfield, co 80200, phone 1-800-845-3567. this model of hardtop allows the roof portion that covers the front driver and passenger compartment to be removed. the roof rack carrier is used to lock in place this section of the roof so you can store it and drive with it on top of your vehicle. i was traveling approximately 55-60 mph entering the i-495 from the on ramp. we hit a very slight bump in the interstate and the section of the roof connected to the roof rack dislodged and flew off the vehicle. the portion of the roof rack carrier that failed was not the locking mechanism. it appears the rear support beam bent because of air under the roof causing a bolt to break. we have recovered most of the roof and carrier which shows the locking mechanism did not fail but the bar bent and bolt broke. [xxx] was a passenger in the vehicle. his address is [xxx] the roof weighs approximately 50 lbs. luckily no vehicles were behind us but a death or seriously bodily injury would have been imminent from the roof breaking free from the roof rack information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr |
