Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: I purchased and mounted a rola swinging enclosed cargo carrier for a 2 inch hitch for use on my 1999 chevy express van according to the manufacturers instructions. the third time used on my vehicle i was entering a roadway from a parking lot when the nut on the swing-away arm snagged on the pavement and bent the hitch frame of the cargo carrier. i was going slowly and there was nothing particularly remarkable about the transition from the parking lot to the roadway. also, the cargo in the carrier was well within the advertised 250 lb load capacity. evidently the design allows insufficient ground clearance. in retrospect, the installation instructions provided did not mention this hazard or provide any recommendation for minimum ground clearance. damage was fortunately limited to the cargo carrier itself and trailer hitch receiver lock but was severe enough that these are no longer serviceable. no apparent damage to the hitch/receiver or vehicle frame. note, there is a non-swinging version of the same (hitch-mounted) cargo carrier. on the swing-away version, it appears that the nut and bolt used to pivot the swinging part of the hitch frame reduces ground clearance by an additional 1 1/2 inches over that of the non-swinging model. i have contacted the vendor of this equipment (etrailer.com) regarding this issue and they have apparently chosen to ignore my correspondence. *nm |
