Was Vehicle Towed: - Description of the Complaints: 2003 kit extreme model 22txu travel trailer.purchased new from la mesa rv in davis ,ca in 04/2003. i take 4-6 trips a year. appx 15k total miles on trailer to date. gvwr of 10890.equipped with two 5200 lbs axles and st 225/75r15d tires on 15x6 two piece steel rims. multiple blowouts on tires through the yrs and last two trips i have had 2 rim failures.one has cracked on bead edge and other has completely broken center section away from outer section resulting in tire/rim half coming off trailer in tow. upon visiting tire center i was informed that reason for constant blowouts was due to only having less than 2 inches of clearance between top of tire tread and underside of trailer wheel well, normal clearance is in the 6 inch or more range for proper suspension movement.this lack of clearance results in tire being scrubbed on underside of wheel well and overloaded from weight of trailer slamming on top of tire. also informed that rims were only rated to appx 1500 lbs load capacity each and were well below fmvss standards for this application. took trailer to la mesa rv in davis for warranty/safety repair. they looked at trailer tire clearance and broken rims as well as had les schwab tire center which is located next store look at this and both agreed there is a safety issue.les schwab looked further into rim load capacity and verified that they are at best rated to 1500 lbs each. la mesa contacted trailer manufacturer(kit extreme) and informed them of safety problem and were told it would not be covered due to 2yr warranty on trailer. la mesa informed extreme that trailer carried a 5yr manufacturer warranty and have paperwork stating so. la mesa was told that kit was purchased by extreme in jan of 2003 and would not honor the 5 yr warranty. la mesa informed them regardless of that, there is a safety issue and it needs to be covered and that this is in violation of fmvss title 49 part 571 standards. as of sept 29-2006 extreme will not authorize repairs. *nm
