Was Vehicle Towed: - Description of the Complaints: I purchased a brand new 2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 in may, 2006. i had no trouble with the vehicle.. until october 27. i had 3800 miles on the truck. i had filled my gas tank just out of san francisco and drove approximately 60 miles just out side of calistoga, california northbound on hwy 29. a winding, uphill mountainous road, single lane traffic except for a few passing lanes and turn-outs. i was driving up an incline. i noticed smoke wisping behind the cab. almost immediately, the truck died... red indicators on. fortunately, it died right at a wide passing lane location, and i veered to the right, blocking one of two northbound lanes. i got out of the truck and saw serious smoke and some flame coming from under the bed of the truck, up between the cab and the front of the bed. a vehicle behind me, evidently saw it already and pulled over to assist. another vehicle, driving southbound pulled over, had an extinguisher which i shot underneath the bed, but it did not help. at that point, i was concerned that the vehicle would blow up . there was an extreme fire danger in the area and there was a strong possibility that this could also turn into a forest fire. there was no stopping the fire . the truck was engulfed in flames. the calistoga fire department was enroute. the fire department arrived and doused the truck fire and a brush fire. california highway patrol showed up. secured the area for the fire department to neutralize any residual fires and the arrival of the tow truck. the truck was totally burned. a full blown raging truck fire, on a single lane highway in extremely dry conditions, in the middle of an area with blind turns in both directions. absolutely amazing. *jb
