Was Vehicle Towed: - Description of the Complaints: Speedometer needle does not record speed accurately, resulting in vehicle traveling either much faster, or much slower than the speed indicated (onboard computer indicated i was traveling at 92 mph, while the speedometer recorded 66; another time the onboard computer indicated i was traveling 56 mph while the speedometer indicated 87). eventually, the speedometer needle pegs to 120 mph and stays there. in researching this issue, i have seen literally hundreds of complaints of this same problem. the local dealer said they have been fixing a lot of these speedometer problems; problem is with speedometer needle only (the counter weight for the needle, or the problem with the speedometers in 2003 and up chevy trucks is caused by a tiny broken gear in the actual meter movement. the gear is a small piece of cylindrical metal surrounded by a plastic gear - the gear is held in place by 3 plastic ribs. one of the ribs cracks causing an offset. if you picture the gear as a child's top - when you normally spin the top it spins straight up and down. because the rib breaks it causes the gear to be out of balance and thus the rotation then "wobbles". this causes the gear to get stuck at various locations. gm knows of this problem.. 2004 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd (also many other complaints were relative to silverado 1500). *nm
