Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: I was driving monte carlo ss 2000 the other day and smoke started coming out of the steering wheel. i inhaled a mouthful, the throat burned all day. almost in an accident. the windshield wipers started running and would not shut off, so i removed the fuse. i noticed my headlights no longer worked also. when i got home i opened the dashboard and steering wheel cover , and the burnt smell was coming from the turn signal switch. i opened the switch, and everything inside was melted. i notified general motors right away. they told me to take it to a gm dealer , so i did. but the gm dealer wanted to charge a $100 to diagnose. none of the fuses on the car blew out when the switch started on fire. i found a used switch for $85.00 so it cost less the dealer to tell me it was bad. it was a faulty switch , and gm told me i could only have a gm dealer fix it. i told them i could not justify or afford paying more for the diagnosis than the used part. gm told me i could not put a new switch in myself or i won't be reimbursed if there was a recall. this was a very serious safety issue. gm won't help me out anyway and they didn't really seem to care about this issue. so i either go to the dealer and pay $500 to get it fixed or pay $85 and do myself. they put me in a situation so they didn't have to do anything about this problem. i told them i would send the switch to them, but they didn't want it. neither could i have another mechanic replace it except for gm. this was rediculous. someonewas going to get killed if this happened again.*ak |
