| Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: My complaint is regarding the new britax regent manual (dated 06/07): http://www.britaxusa.net/support/regent_r2.pdf.pdf. itl states that the short route for latch is required for children 40-80 pounds (page 12). there is also a warning that latch should not be used for a child above 48 pounds (which is consistent with most vehicle manufacturer's recommendations). allowing latch up to 80 pounds could result is carseat failure if the vehicle manufacturer has not approved latch to that weight. another dangerous statement in this new manual is ""secure the child restraint with the versa tether, if available, or with a vehicle belt." (page 2), which implies that the carseat can be installed with the top tether alone. if parents follow these instructions, the carseat will not be safety secured in the vehicle. another discrepancy is the instruction to route the latch strap or seatbelt over the back of the harness when using the long belt path (pages 14, 17, and 18). a tightly installed carseat may have a harness that can not be tightened to properly fit the child, if this is followed. this manual also fails to clarify that the top tether is a requirement for any latch installation. it recommends using the tether when available to "improve installation", but does not acknowledge that latch is a system (lower anchors and tethers for children) that requires the use of the top tether. the manual lists when the tether is required and latch installations are not listed there (page 22). another error (page 18) is under the heading for lap belt installation long route: "figure a illustrates a typical short route lap belt installation", and it shows a picture of the long route. i am a certified child passenger safety technician, and i am disturbed by the contradictions and unsafe recommendations in this new manual. please look into this. i have never seen a child seat manual with so many potentially dangerous statements in it. |
