Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: I have experienced 2 failures of the accessory drive belt tensioner on my 1995 plymouth voyager. the first failure occurred while i was operating the vehicle at about 10 mph. the belt tensioner assembly broke away from the mounting resulting in the loss of my power steering and nearly causing an accident. i had the vehicle towed to the dealer and a new belt tensioner put in. the service man told me that they had seen a lot of these belt tensioner failures. recently, during a service visit to replace the faulty airbag on the vehicle, the service people reported that the belt tensioner was again "frozen" and needed to be replaced. when i asked whether they would replace the part for free, they told me to call chrysler customer service. i called chrysler customer service and they told me that they could not do anything for me, and that chrysler did not consider this problem to be a safety problem. i consider this a serious safety problem. it certainly was a safety issue when it failed on my vehicle the first time, and i could barely steer the vehicle. i have also seen at least one other near accident due to the same belt tensioner problem on anothe vehicle. i believe that this is a chronic problem with this vehicle and needs to be investigated. *ak |
