Was Vehicle Towed: - | Description of the Complaints: The van lost all power while traveling at 65+ mph on an interstate highway. this occurred suddenly with no warning after the van hit a slight bump in the road. after putting the vehicle in neutral and coasting to a stop on the side of the highway, the van was restarted and driven to a dealership. the dealership ran a computer diagnostic that found no problems (since the van lost all power nothing was registered in the onboard computer memory). we got back on the road and 1.5 hours later the same thing happened. this time it was at night, on an extended section of interstate with no shoulder. we were lucky that no one was following closely behind. again, after placing the van in neutral and coasting to a stop, the van was restarted and driven to a motel. the vehicle was repaired at a service station, the mechanic said he had seen a similar problem on 6-8 + vans over the past several years. though no diffinitive diagnostic could be run to detect a short circuit in the electric fuel pump, the pump was replaced and no further problems occurred. failure of the fuel pump and loss of all power is a serious malfunction at high speeds. i question whether the problem is more widespread and indicative of a defect in design or manufacture. |
