Subject: Irvine Shade & Door Glass Shower Doors | Summary: On september 6, 2007 keystone rv company notified nhtsa (07v-411) that certain irvine shade & door glass shower doors with towel bars could break if pressure is applied to the towel bar.the risk of glass breakage can result in personal injury.keystone stated that vehicles produced between october 19, 2006 and july 26, 2007 were affected.on december 4, 2008 coachmen rv notified nhtsa (08v-639) that coachmen vehicles produced between june 15, 2001 and august 6, 2007 also contained this equipment.on 12/30/2008, rmd mailed irvine an ir letter requesting its customer list and determination on whether an equipment defect report would be filed with nhtsa.after no response, another ir letter was mailed to irvine on 3/5/2009.irvine submitted a customer list to nhtsa's chief counsel on 6/4/2009 requesting confidentiality for its customer list.however, no letter was submitted answering rmd's questions on whether a defect report would be filed.on 11/13/2009, chief counsel granted confidentiality to irvine's customer list while allowing limited release of oem names for needed rmd mailings.on 12/23/2009, rmd mailed ir letters to 161 companies identified as vehicle manufacturers & new vehicle alterers (out of 502 customers on irvine's customer list).ir response statistics below: ir letters mailed: 161 ir responses :72 no response :63 returned letters:26of those responding to rmd's ir letter, 75% (54 of 72 companies) stated they had never purchased the subject glass shower doors from irvine.irvine supplied many of these companies with a letter stating that the inclusion of their company name on the customer list submitted to nhtsa was done in error.no revised or corrected customer list was ever submitted to rmd.those companies that did purchase the subject shower doors chose not to file any subsequent defect reports citing ongoing reviews of warranty claims or no substantial warranty history at all.on 3/22/2010, another ir letter was mailed to irvine requesting a corrected customer list and defect determination.no response was ever received.preliminary referral to nhtsa chief counsel indicates this matter will not be addressed immediately due to current workload.future referral to ncc for civil penalties is likely considering irvine's inability to respond to several nhtsa information requests under 49 usc 30166.this eq is closed. |
