Subject: mDRIVE Transmission Failure to Disengage | Summary: In a review of field reports submitted under early warning reporting (ewr) 49cfr 579.22(c), over several years by mack trucks, the office of defects investigation (odi) identified a trend of drivers who complained that their transmissions failed to disengage from gear while slowing the vehicle. this failure to disengage resulted in the truck wanting to pull through the service brakes when coming to a stop. affected trucks are equipped with an mdrive automated manual transmissions. the repair has involved the replacement and/or adjustment of the service brake switch.odi previously investigated (pe13-268) a similar concern on 2007-2012 volvo trucks equipped with an i-shift automated manual transmission in which the clutch would not automatically disengage as intended. the investigation resulted in volvo releasing safety recall 13v-268.both volvo i-shift and mack mdrive transmissions share similar configurations in their design and function. mack is a subsidiary of ab volvo who also manufacture volvo trucks.this preliminary evaluation is opened to examine the alleged defect in all affected vehicles.the odi report cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/searchnhtsaid using the following complaint identification number: 10839430 |
